On Nov. 27, Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZ) announced that a delegation of 11 researchers, including Professor Han Nam-sik, AI Center Director at the Milner Research Institute affiliated with the University of Cambridge, and Senior Researcher Georgia Sakkoziorga visited IFEZ. They toured the Korea Stanford Center (SCIGC) and the Incheon Global Campus (IGC), both established by Stanford University in Songdo.

Commissioner Kim Jin-yong of IFEZ, who introduced IGC and the bio-industry of Songdo to Tony Kouzarides, director of the Milner Research Institute, during his 2018 visit to Cambridge, has been consistently working to attract the Milner Research Institute. The Milner Research Institute is currently discussing an internal business plan at Cambridge University to establish a branch in Songdo and prepare for approval from the university next year. The process will continue with approval from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, followed by a final contract signing.

The Milner Research Institute, affiliated with the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cambridge, conducts various research activities, including the development of innovative pharmaceuticals, using AI. It actively collaborates globally with pharmaceutical and biotech companies such as AstraZeneca and JW Pharmaceuticals.

The University of Cambridge is ranked second worldwide according to the Quacquarelli Symonds global university rankings and has produced numerous global leaders, including prime ministers and Nobel laureates.

Commissioner Kim Jin-yong stated, “The establishment of the Milner Research Institute in Songdo will be advantageous in securing outstanding human resources and is expected to create synergistic effects with leading Korean bio-pharmaceutical companies like Celltrion, Samsung Biologics, Samsung Bioepis, SK bioscience, and Severance Hospital.”
