Hyundai Motor Group and U.S.-based company Aptiv’s autonomous driving joint venture, Motional, are starting production of the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi in Singapore.

According to Motional on Nov. 22, production has begun at the Hyundai Motor Group Singapore Global Innovation Center (HMGICS) for the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi equipped with level 4 autonomous driving technology.

The IONIQ 5 Robotaxis produced at HMGICS will be deployed in Motional’s commercial services in the United States starting next year. Motional and Hyundai Motor Group emphasize that the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi is the first SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicle to receive certification under the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

Jung Hong-beom, CEO of HMGICS, stated, “HMGICS is Hyundai Motor Group’s first global innovation hub and a global testbed for future mobility. Our role is to innovate the mobility value chain by developing and producing advanced future mobility solutions of various forms. In collaboration with Motional, the production of the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi has commenced, marking our continuous commitment to innovation and leading the paradigm shift in future mobility.”
