Koreans spent more than 104.4 billion minutes on YouTube in October, according to a survey.

WiseApp-Retail Goods, a company that analyzes mobile applications and retail, announced on Nov. 15 that it surveyed Korean smartphone users on their YouTube usage time. The survey was conducted among 51.2 million users of the iOS and Android Operating Systems.

According to WiseApp, YouTube users spent 104.4 billion minutes on YouTube in October. This was a jump of more than 10 billion minutes in one year from 91.3 billion minutes in October 2022. It was also a 2.6-fold increase from 39.5 billion minutes in October 2018. It increased sharply in five years.

WiseApp also announced the longest-used mobile apps by Koreans. In these rankings, gaps were very wide between YouTube and other apps. As of October, YouTube was the number one app, with 104.4 billion minutes of usage, 3.3 times more than mobile messenger KakaoTalk (31.9 billion minutes) and 6 times more than SNS Instagram (17.2 billion minutes).

“YouTube’s usage has tripled over the past five years,” WiseApp said. “The number of users and hours spent on YouTube grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has been on the uptick after the endemic.”

“Thanks to the popularity of short video clips, YouTube’s usage time and share is also dominating,” WiseApp said. “We expect gaps between usage time with other apps and average YouTube viewing time per person to expand in the future.”
