“Samsung Gauss will go beyond simply understanding and generating language to maximize interactions between users and devices and provide a more intuitive and natural user experience,” said Lee Joo-hyung, vice president of Samsung Research, in a demonstration of Samsung Gauss at the Samsung Developer Conference Korea 2023 at Samsung Electronics’ Seocho Office in Seoul on Nov. 14.

Samsung Gauss is a generative AI system developed by Samsung Electronics to bring innovation to Samsung Electronics’ workplaces and further give new experiences to people’s daily lives. Samsung will initially make Samsung Gauss available to Samsung employees to help them become more productive and will later expand its use across Samsung Electronics’ various product groups. The first product expected to feature Samsung Gauss is the Galaxy S24, which will be released early next year. Samsung Electronics recently announced that real-time interpretation services for calls will be available on the Galaxy S24 series.

In his welcoming remarks at the event, Jeon Kyung-hoon, CTO of Samsung Electronics’ DX division and head of Samsung Research, emphasized the importance of software for a digital transformation. “The innovation that Samsung Electronics pursues always starts with customer experiences, and the best customer experience is one that intelligently knows functions that users need and organically provides them to create more sophisticated, high-level, and customized experiences,” Jeon said. “The roles and competitiveness of software in realizing digital innovation, a keyword of future technology, will become more important down the road.”

Samsung Gauss consists of three models that can generate languages, code, and images based on machine learning technology. It is not just one model, but a family of models, Lee explained.

First, the Gaussian language model is responsible for generating text for writing emails, summarizing documents, and translation. In particular, the Gaussian language model has been developed as a multilingual model that supports not only Korean, but English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese for more ease of use.

The Samsung Gauss code model is a specialized code generation model developed to boost efficiency in software development. Currently, the market has several generative AI-based tools that help elevate productivity in software development processes but they lack knowledge of Samsung’s product codes, resulting in lower utilization and accuracy. In addition, utilizing external tools can lead to code leakage, making them difficult to utilize within Samsung Electronics.

Therefore, Samsung Electronics will make its AI coding assistant “Code.i” available to its developers. It can be utilized to raise the productivity of new development by creating code with AI.

The Samsung Gauss image model specializes in creating, editing, and converting images. With the Samsung Gauss Image Model, users can create, edit, and transform images and freely share created photos. It will also be possible to utilize this model to create images by entering in text.

It was designed to work within devices, saving users the risk of information leaks. “Samsung Research has developed on-device Gauss models of various sizes to be embedded in different products, which can be used to perform many functions of generative models quickly and privately in devices without going through cloud computing,” Lee said.

“We minimize risks by screening data for compliance and privacy, among others, from the data collection stage,” Lee said. “We detect vulnerabilities and take countermeasures for them by steadily carrying out stability tests of AI models from a verifiable stage.”
