LS Materials, a subsidiary of LS Cable & System, has announced on Nov. 8 that it will supply ultracapacitors (UC), also known as “next-generation secondary batteries,” to a Japanese manufacturer of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs).

The UC is an industrial special battery known for its rapid charging and discharging capabilities and long lifespan. The Japanese company will install it on AGVs for component transportation in clean rooms and supply these to semiconductor factories in Taiwan.

Utilizing the rapid charging feature of the UC allows AGVs to be charged in real time during operation. This eliminates the need for separate charging time, enabling 24-hour equipment operation, and allows for electricity regeneration, thus reducing power consumption.

Hong Young-ho, CEO of LS Materials, said, “Our technology has been proven by being used in AGVs at logistics centers of companies like Amazon and Walmart in the United States. Considering the rapid growth of the robotics market led by AGVs due to aging societies and decreasing labor populations, we plan to expand our marketing efforts.”

Meanwhile, LS Materials is the world’s leading large UC manufacturer. It is preparing to file a securities report in October and is pursuing a KOSDAQ listing within the year. UCs are rapidly replacing and complementing primary batteries and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in advanced industries, including AGVs, wind turbines, Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and electric vehicles.
