On Oct. 31, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) signed a nuclear decommissioning cooperation agreement with Kinectrics, a Canadian nuclear engineering firm, at Kinectrics’ headquarters in Toronto.

The agreement will enable the dispatch of domestic technical personnel to overseas nuclear decommissioning sites and will also encompass technical consultations and invitation-based training by foreign experts. Previously, in 2019, KHNP had entered into an MOU with Kinectrics, and in 2021 they dispatched Korean personnel to Canadian nuclear decommissioning sites.

On the same day, KHNP also signed a letter of intent with Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) at the NWMO headquarters in Toronto, focusing on collaboration regarding heavy water reactor fuel handling techniques.

NWMO is a non-profit organization jointly funded by Canadian power companies to ensure the safe and long-term management of spent nuclear fuel. It also conducts research and development in related fields.

Additionally, KHNP is currently drafting the final decommissioning plan for Wolseong Unit 1 with the goal of applying for decommissioning approval by June of next year. Once approved, the actual decommissioning process will commence.
