SK telecom, the South Korean telecommunications giant, has announced a joint venture with global telecoms company Deutsche Telekom to collaboratively develop a Large Language Model (LLM) geared towards AI vision realization.

On Oct. 22, SK telecom revealed that they had joined forces with Deutsche Telekom to co-develop a “telecom-focused AI Large Language Model (LLM)” at the SK Seorin Building in the Jongno district of Seoul on Oct. 20, enabling global telecom companies to develop generative AI models swiftly and effortlessly.

In collaboration with AI firms like Anthropic and Meta, SK telecom and Deutsche Telekom are planning to co-develop a telecom-specific multilingual large language model catering to languages such as German, English, and Korean. Both companies intend to unveil the telecom-focused specialized LLM by the first quarter of next year.

The telecom-focused LLM possesses a superior understanding of telecommunications service-related domains and is adept at comprehending user intentions, making it especially suitable for applications in AI call centers and other customer service functions.

Based on this, the primary objective of both companies’ development efforts is to support global telecommunications companies in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to design flexible generative AI services like AI agents, tailored to each country’s specific environment.

Furthermore, both corporations are set to co-develop AI platform technologies that can be utilized in the creation of generative AI services, aiming to streamline both the development period and associated costs.

This means that, in the future, international telecom companies looking to build AI call centers based on generative AI will be able to establish these centers more swiftly and flexibly, in alignment with the telecommunications environment.

Both firms anticipate that through this collaboration they can proactively address the surging demand for generative AI among telecom providers and hope to stimulate the expansion of the global AI ecosystem through the successful implementation of generative AI optimized for specific industries or domains.
