The world’s largest semiconductor foundry, TSMC, announced on Sept. 19 that it plans to achieve RE100 ten years ahead of its original goal set for 2050. Furthermore, the company has increased its renewable energy consumption goal for 2030 from 40% to 60% of its total consumption.

TSMC revealed that, without specifying names, it has signed a power purchase agreement with the world’s leading renewable energy company. The semiconductor giant has also established a platform to match renewable energy sources with industrial power consumption and signed a 20-year joint contract for 20,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy.

This move appears to be a proactive approach to comply with regulations related to foreign countries like the European Union to minimize potential disruptions in semiconductor exports, overseas expansions, and foreign investments.

Samsung Electronics, a competitor of TSMC, joined RE100 in September last year and plans to achieve carbon neutrality, reducing its direct and indirect carbon emissions to zero by 2050.
