According to a recent survey, South Korean companies, which have secured the top position in major industry products and service sectors worldwide, have now risen to the third spot along with Japanese companies in terms of global market share.

In its 2022 self-conducted survey of market share in 63 major product and service sectors, Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Sept. 4 that South Korean companies achieved the top position globally in six categories: smartphones, DRAM, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, NAND flash memory chips, ultra-thin TVs, and shipbuilding.

In five electronics sectors, including smartphones, Samsung Electronics secured the top position, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries emerged as the new leader in the shipbuilding sector last year. Japanese companies held the top spot globally in six sectors, including Toyota in automobiles, Canon in digital cameras, and ATL in portable lithium-ion batteries. With HD Hyundai Heavy Industries joining the ranks of top companies, South Korea increased its number of leaders by one compared to the previous year, while Japan decreased by one.

In the survey covering a wide range of industries, the United States claimed the top spot in over one-third, or 22 sectors, making it the most dominant. China followed closely with 16 sectors where Chinese companies ranked first. The sectors where U.S. companies secured the top position included Tesla in electric vehicles, Applied Materials in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, Pfizer in biopharmaceuticals, Amazon in cloud services, and Apple in tablet PCs.

China, on the other hand, excelled in various areas such as electric vehicle essential components like vehicle lithium-ion batteries from CATL and large liquid crystal panels from BOE, as well as personal computers from Lenovo, surveillance cameras from Hikvision, refrigerators and washing machines from Haier, and mobile communication infrastructure from Huawei.
