From January to July this year, the accumulated export value of ramen surpassed US$500 million for the first time, marking a historic high for the period. The success and popularity of K-content such as dramas and movies are believed to have contributed to this growth.

According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation and the Customs Service, ramen exports from the start of the year until July were tallied at US$522,029,000. This is an increase of 17.7% compared to the previous record during the same period last year, which amounted to US$443,341,000.

On an annual basis, considering last year’s ramen export revenue of US$765.43 million, there’s a possibility that this year might break the US$1 billion mark. The volume of ramen exports from January to July has surged from 33,304.7 tons in 2015 to 134,790.5 tons this year, a growth by a factor of 4.4.

One of the major reasons for the growing demand for Korean ramen overseas is the proliferation of K-content. Scenes in Korean movies and TV variety shows where characters consume ramen have amplified global interest in the product. Notably, the “Jjapaguri” (a combination of Nongshim’s Jjapaghetti and Neoguri) featured in the movie Parasite garnered significant international attention.

A representative from Nongshim stated, “As Korean culture gains traction globally, Korean ramen is also receiving significant attention. The momentum began with the Parasite Academy Award win in 2020, and the ‘BTS effect’ has further accelerated this growth.”

Korean ramen is steadily becoming a global trend, riding on the waves of various social media. For instance, the Spicy Buldak Ramen by Samyang Foods gained popularity after BTS’s Jimin was seen enjoying it during a live broadcast, sparking social media challenges across various countries where participants tried the product.

The continuing convenience food trend due to the COVID-19 pandemic also had a positive impact on Korean ramen exports.

An industry insider explained, “Korean ramen offers a fulfilling meal concept, providing rich flavor and ample nutrition all while promoting Korean food culture.”
