The iPhone X recorded the highest-ever price among smartphones. Analysis says that iPhone X parts cost around 400,000 won.
According to market researcher IHS Markit on November 9, the hardware cost of the iPhone X is estimated to be US$370.2. The iPhone X is retailing for US$ 999 for the 64GB model and US$1,149 for the 256GB model. In Korea, the 64GB model is priced at 1,600,000 won (US$1,440) and the 256GB model at 1,630,000 won (US$1,460). Even taking tax into consideration, the iPhone X is about 200,000 won (US$180) more expensive in Korea than in the US.
"The basic structure of the iPhone X is similar to that of the iPhone 8 Plus," said Andrew Lassweiler, a director of IHS Markit. "But the price of the iPhone X was pulled up by its AMOLED display and TrueDepth sensing function."
The most prominent feature of the iPhone X is Face ID which recognizes users’ faces. Face ID works through the TrueDepth sensing system in the black notch on the top, and takes charge of authentication for unlocking and payment instead of existing Touch ID. "The assembly and testing of the TrueDepth system and its components are a pretty tricky process, which must have delayed production of the iPhone X," said Jérémie Bouchaud, a senior director at IHS Markit.
Meanwhile, IHS Markit added that all parts of the Samsung Galaxy S8 (64GB) model cost US$302 and the model retailed at about US$720.
In the meantime, some iPhone X users claim that a “green vertical line” appears on the organic light emitting diode (OLED) screen of their iPhone X one after with the launch of the iPhone X in Korea about ten days away. The line is similar to a 'pink vertical line' phenomenon that occurred to some of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
According to Mac Rumors, an information technology (IT) media outlet specializing in news about Apple products on November 12, at least 25 users uploaded photos of the iPhone X with such symptoms in the internet forum of Mac Rumors, the Apple customer support community, Twitter, Facebook, and Reddit among others. In many of these cases, bright green vertical lines were clearly visible on the left or right side of screens but occasionally occurred at spots slightly distant from edges. This occurred in several countries including the United States, Canada, Poland, Australia, etc., and appeared on screens of 64GB and 256GB models, silver and space gray models, Mac Rumors said.
