Analysis came out that China's Baidu AI would outperform Samsung’s Bixby and Apple’s Siri within three years in the global smartphone artificial intelligence (AI) assistant market. Bixby's share is expected to be halved within three years, making it urgent to address malfunctions and expanding supported languages and devices.

According to Strategy Analytics (SA), a market research firm on November 3, Samsung Bixby's global market share which is 12.7% this year is expected to drop to 6.5% in 2020 and 5.4% in 2022.

It was also forecast that Apple's Siri would also lose some ground. Siri led the overall AI assistant market with a 47.6 percent share last year, but fell to 41.1 percent this year, giving first place to Google Assistant. Siri’s share is expected to shrink to 21.1% in 2020.

The poor performances of Bixby and Siri were blamed on the fact that these AI secretaries were only applicable to their own smartphones (Bixby for Samsung smartphones only and Siri for the iPhone only) and that there were many functional areas that need improving, SA explained. More than six months have passed since the release of Bixby but Bixby is still suffering from some malfunction problems. Unlike its original goal of supporting eight languages, Bixby is still limited to two languages, Korean and English. Apple Siri is considered to have the lowest level of natural language processing among AI assistants in the market.

Unlike the two leading manufacturers, Baidu and Google are expected to increase their market shares gradually. Baidu's AI assistant, DuerOS, which accounts for 13.0% of the market this year, is expected to elevate its market share every year to 21.2% in 2020.

China's largest search engine company Baidu is shifting its focus from the portal business to the AI business. Based on a powerful national language database, the Chinese search giant provides personal assistant service DuerOS to Chinese smartphones.

Google Assistant is also expected to raise its market share gradually thanks to the expansion of AI assistant functions to low-end phones. This year, Google Assistant is enjoying a market share of 45.9%, ranking first in the AI assistant market. Google Assistant is expected to grow into a dominant artificial intelligence solution for smartphones with its market share expected to hit 57.7% in 2020 and 60.3% in 2022.

According to SA, 93 percent of the premium smartphones priced US$300 or more sold this year were loaded with AI assistants. In 2022, AI assistants will be loaded into 80% of all smartphones that will run over US$100 each.
