It has been found that connection to the official websites of bitcoin exchanges Bithumb and Coinone was temporarily interrupted at around 8:00 p.m., June 12. Bithumb said that it was checking its servers after a sudden increase in the number of connections. Coinone made a similar announcement, too.
In the meantime, the value of Ethereum jumped to 477,000 won (US$429) at 7:20 p.m., June 12, resulting in an exponential increase in trading amount.
The value of this digital currency has steeply risen since the beginning of this year as in the case of Bitcoin. According to CoinDesk, the price of Ethereum skyrocketed from US$8.52 to US$250.41 between January 1 and June 11 this year.
This rapid increase is being led by South Korean virtual currency investors. According to CryptoCompare, 38% of the total amount of Ethereum trading currently derives from South Korea.
