According to industry sources on May 1, the production of GM Korea’s Spark export model recently stopped at Changwon Factory.

An order to correct defects in the US forced the suspension. On May 18, GM announced a recall of about 55,000 units produced from 2016 to 2017 due to safety problems with front passenger airbags of the Spark.

"Unless a child wears a seat belt in the passenger seat of the Spark, the front airbag can injure the neck, and the level of injury risk does not meet federal safety standards. This fact triggered the recall," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US.

It seems that this recall led to the suspension of production of the North American-type Spark in Korea.
