Hyundai Mobis announced on April 13 that it will turn its 10-year-old research center in India into a specialized lab dedicated to developing core software for future car technology such as multimedia, DAS and autonomous driving.

Until now, Hyundai Mobis Technical Center of India, which was established in Hyderabad in 2007, has been focusing on software quality verification and developing software for localized auto parts. In fact, it contributed to the acquisition of the ISO 26262 certification for software used in the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) system and Lane Keeping Assist system (LKAS) by leading the development and verification of major automotive electronics software. In addition, the research center jointly developed a digital radio receiver, which is capable of detecting digital radio broadcasts from all over India, with the Indian branch of NXP Semiconductors, the world's largest supplier of automotive semiconductors, for the first time in the nation.

The research center in India has increased the number of researchers by more than 90 times to 450 early this year from 5 when it was first established in 2007, focusing on software quality verification and developing application software for localized components. It will now focus on ramping up its software design capabilities and collaborate closely with its Mabuk R&D hub in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, to develop the applied software necessary for fully self-driving cars.

“By securing our own technology development capabilities in the entire process from product planning, design and mass production, we will focus on making strategic auto parts catered to local conditions while also coming up with software that can bring forward the era of unmanned cars,” said Cho Gyu-ryang, director of the company’s technical center in India.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis currently has four overseas research centers in India, Germany, China and United States as well as Mabuk research center. The Mabuk Technical Center serves as the company’s R&D headquarters that encompasses the entire research sectors from autonomous driving and environmentally friendly automotive electronics to chassis, brake, steering, lamp and safety.
