Kumho Tire has won “Red Dot Design Award 2017,” a prestigious international design award in Germany, first among the local tire makers for the sixth consecutive year.

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the global top three design awards including Germany’s International Forum Design (IF) and US-based International Excellence Award (IDEA).

The Korea’s second largest tire manufacturer said on April 6 that its CRUGEN HP 71, a premium, and high-performance tire for sport utility vehicles, won the Red Dot Design Award 2017 in the product design category. The tire is 20 percent more efficient in abrasion resistance and driving on snowy roads compared to the existing tires due to a next-generation rubber compound.

The tire’s sidewall, the key determinant of tire design quality, has used hologram technology for the first time in Korea, giving it a luxurious appearance and refined texture. The CRUGEN HP71 is also designed to enable vehicles to achieve optimized performance by vehicle type. For urban-type vehicles, the company focused on strengthening the technology to improve comfort and spread noise by increasing the number of piches with different length, while it improves the capabilities of handling and durability by applying 3D sipe technologies and a stiffness design method for high performance and high load SUVs.

"Winning the Red Dot Design Award for the sixth consecutive year shows that the international community recognizes the excellence and competiveness of our industrial designs, which will contribute the tire’s taking strong presence in the domestic and global markets as a new premium tire " Chung Taek-gyun, head of Kumho Tire's research and development (R&D) division, said.

The CRUGEN HP71 and other award winners will be on display for a year at the Red Dot design museums in Germany and Singapore.
