LG U+ announced on February 22 that it completed the establishment of NB-IoT base stations in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and can provide NB-IoT services once administrative procedures are completed in the South Korean government.

In this regard, LG U+ is planning to supply its IoT business partners with free NB-IoT chipsets and modules in April so that they can work on a variety of IoT devices and services, and industrial IoT ecosystems can be further enriched.

The company’s efforts for IoT ecosystem expansion prior to the commercialization of NB-IoT technology are to take the lead in the industrial IoT market, where intense competition is anticipated this year.

The free NB-IoT chipsets and modules are scheduled to be supplied by Huawei, one of major business partners of LG U+. The South Korean mobile carrier also announced that it would provide a wide range of assistance so that brilliant ideas obtained via the LG U+ Open Lab and contests can be turned into business models.

NB-IoT is a type of technology that is suitable for communication with an object placed at a distance of more than 10 km. LG U+ is planning to launch pilot projects for gas and water metering by making use of the technology and then expand the scope to cover cargo tracking, logistics management and so on.
