A prison sentence was given to a woman in her 60s who was indicted for making malicious comments on an Internet story about SK Chairman Chey Tae-won’s mistress.

On December 15, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced the woman surnamed Kim to eight months in prison with two years’ suspension of sentence and 160 hours of community.

Kim was indicted on charges of defaming Reporter “A” from January to April by commenting on an article about Choi and his mistress surnamed Kim. Reporter “A” is a Korean who belongs to a media company in the United States. It was found that the reporter never introduced the mistress to chairman Chey.

"The defendant repeatedly posted comments without confirming any facts. She also instigated others’ comments by opening a café on the internet. This means that she committed a serious crime," chief judge Kim explained.

Meanwhile, in January 2013, chairman Chey was convicted of embezzling 46.5 billion won of fund investment made by SK Group affiliates and received a four-year imprisonment sentence. Chey was pardoned in August 2015. In December of the same year, chairman Chey disclosed his intention to divorce Roh So-young through a magazine and confessed to having a child born out of wedlock during his marriage.
