Hyundai Motor Co. announced on December 20 that it test-drove the Ioniq self-driving car in Las Vegas in daytime and nighttime for local media on December 15 (local time).

Unlike a test drive of the Genesis in November of last year, this test drive was conducted in an environment similar to that of an ordinary road without controlling traffic and traffic signals. In the test drive, one Ioniq Electric Vehicle and one Ioniq Hybrid equipped with autonomous driving functions ran on various roads such as those of intersections, underpasses, crosswalks and lane merging sections within a 4 km range around the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The two models had to show their ability to cope with unexpected situations such as sudden appearances of people and animals as well as traffic signal changes and demonstrated perfect autonomous driving technology with flying colors even under these conditions, Hyundai Motor explained. The Ioniq self-driving model met Level 4, which means technically a fully autonomous driving level, of the five level autonomous driving levels set by the American Society of Automotive Engineers.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor is accelerating research on the commercialization of autonomous driving vehicles such as acquiring autonomous driving test licenses for all types of roads and environmental conditions for the Ioniq Electric and Hybrid from Nevada in the United States last October.
