As some Samsung Electronics’ smartphones caused errors from software updates, customers’ data were exhausted without their consent. This problem occurred at all three mobile carriers and Samsung Electronics and mobile carriers are now investigating on the extent of the damage and specific models.

According to industry sources on December 13, some Samsung smartphones caused faults after users updated the “Samsung Cloud” service. The devices automatically backed up files in LTE and 3G modes and exhausted data.

The Samsung Cloud service stores and restores data in smartphones and back up files after the procedure for consent of users when connected to Wi-Fi.

The cloud service is Samsung Electronics’ new business to promote in earnest after it released the Galaxy Note 7 in August. Its new products were equipped with the cloud function as the basic option and previous high-end smartphone models, such as the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5, were adopted the cloud service through software updates.

Mobile carrier officials said, “The problem occurred at all three mobile carriers – SK Telecom, KT and LG U+. We are still investigating the reason, specific models and extend of damages.” They haven’t come up with compensation plans for affected consumers and Samsung Electronics hasn’t made official statement regarding the issue yet.

Meanwhile, the cloud is an essential business for the big picture of Samsung’s future business strategies, including smart home, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and connected car. Samsung Electronics has focused on improving its cloud technological competence. In June, the company acquired U.S. cloud services company Joyent.
