The International Telecommunication Union announced on November 22 that South Korea topped this year’s ICT Development Index among 175 countries across the world, followed by Iceland and Denmark.

Among Asian countries, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore ranked sixth, 10th and 20th, respectively. Earlier, South Korea had ranked first in the index in 2010 to 2013 and 2015 and ranked second in 2014.

The ICT Development Index is based on the assessments of accessibility to information and communications technology, the degree of utilization of the technology and ICT literacy. This year, South Korea ranked third in the second and third categories and eighth in the first category. In particular, the country surpassed the others in terms of the numbers of mobile phone and wireless broadband Internet subscribers per 100 people.

“The South Korean government will make continuous efforts so that its experience and fruit of ICT development can be shared with the world and the entire world can benefit from them,” said Choi Won-ho, head of the International Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning.
