After Samsung Electronics recalled the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to a flaw in its battery, a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge owner reported that his smartphone simply caught fire while charging. The Galaxy S7 edge has been a best-selling item since its release in March this year. As the company has announced that it will offer its users an exchange offer, where they can swap their Galaxy Note 7 with Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge in the coming week due to supply shortages, consumers are showing growing concern about the safety of the devices.

According to online media outlet Phone Arena on September 3, a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge owner reported that his smartphone simply caught fire while charging overnight, posting two images of the severely damaged device. He said the device was charging with its Samsung original charging equipment. The handset owner, who reportedly lives in the Middle Eastern region, also said that he got in touch with Samsung, and the company offered him the option to receive a new device or a refund.

Phone Arena said the report came out amid growing public concerns on account of the Note 7 explosions. It reported, however, that the latest incident is not related to a series of Note 7 explosions since the S7 edge uses a different battery from the one used in the Galaxy Note 7.

The S7 Edge has sold more than 60 million units since the release in March, gaining popularity in the global market.

In regard to the report, the domestic community said, “The latest incident is not like the Note 7 incidents which saw dozens of explosions.”
