SK Telecom is accelerating its transformation from a business model to focus on ramping up the mobile phone service to a platform business operator.

On July 17, SK Telecom opened its T Map service to subscribers of all wireless telecommunication service carriers such as KT, LG U+ and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). Then the company also changed T Cloud, a cloud service developed for SK Telecom customers only into “Cloud Berry” a free cloud service for everyone.

SK Telecom made these core value-added services free. This change is interpreted as the company’s will to transform itself into a subscriber-based platform business operator.  That is to say, SK Telecom broke away from its business model to attract subscribers with convenient services such as T Map or T Cloud and made them available to all mobile service users. It is said that a judgment that SK Telecom cannot grow any longer by way of a simple mobile communication model prompted the company to make a full-scale change. According to SK Telecom on July 25, SK Telecom made the T Map service free on July 19 and its user is on a sharp rise.

Last weekend, the number of T Map users added up to more than 2.2 million, the average number of daily users. This means that subscribers of other wireless services are connecting to the T Map service one after another after hearing the opening of the service. This reflects the high effects of making the service free.

SK Telecom is planning to build a location information service and expand ties with various industries by making good use of navigation and location information accumulated whenever people user the service.

The company is planning to utilize T Map information in various fields such as the trade of used cars, collaboration with car repair shops and an information and coupon service based on destinations in addition to insurance connected to driving habits.
