Experts are pointing out that the global Pokemon Go sensation is because of Pokemon characters and simple game content utilizing the characters rather than the novel technology of augmented reality (AR). They are also saying that the South Korean government and South Korean game developers are focusing too much on new technology while being lazy in working on content and services.

The same AR technology as that is applied to the Pokemon Go, in fact, has already been developed in South Korea as a result of a 12 billion won project that started in 2009. However, the government and game developers have overlooked the importance of attractive content making use of the technology, causing the expensive advanced technology to get rusty. On the contrary, Nintendo combined AR with world-famous Pokemon characters to come up with an easy game and a huge success story.

“Pokemon Go is a textbook example of easy and fun content that is based on combination between existing AR technology and already-famous digital content,” said an industry expert, adding, “It is a proof that new technology and new industries can become successful only when they have content catering for the general public.”
