On July 7, Samsung Electronics announced that they developed the world’s first 256GB UFS card, an ultra high speed storage device which is five times faster than SD cards. UFS cards mean external memory cards developed based on UFS 2.0, an internal memory standard set by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). 256GB UFS cards boast the largest storage capacity and fastest speed among external memory cards. They feature a reading speed of 530MB/s which is the same as that of 6.35㎝(2.5 inch) SSDs.

External UFS cards can finish reading a 5GB full HD video for 10-plus seconds, five or more times faster than current micro SD cards. In particular, as the same parallel processing technology as that of SSDs was applied, users can feel up to 12 times better performance, depending on usage conditions.

When it comes to writing, the new 256GB UFS card attains a 170MB/s sequential write speed, almost doubling the top-end micro SD card speed. With these substantial performance improvements, the new card significantly reduces multimedia data downloading time, photo thumbnail loading time and buffer clearing time in burst shooting mode, which, collectively, can be particularly beneficial to DSLR camera users.

To shoot 24 large/extra fine JPEG photographs (1,120 MB-equivalent) continuously with a DSLR camera, the 256GB UFS card about six seconds, compared to a micro SD card which usually takes about 32 seconds at 35MB/s. When it comes to writing, the new 256GB UFS card is 350 times higher than an entry-level micro SD card. Therefore, the newly developed card enables DSLR cameras to handle complicated work such as photo file searches and video downloads as fast as smartphones.
