Gwangju Mayor Yoon Jang-hyun explains how the local government will carry out its policies for the second half.

Gwangju Metropolitan City Mayor Yoon Jang-hyun said on June 21, “I will do my best to open the future of Gwangju by speeding up the creation of a massive car production cluster in the second half of the 6th metropolitan city government elected by popular vote.” At the press conference held to review the two years into the 6th publicly elected government, Mayor Yoon announced his plan to turn the city into a mecca for the auto industry as one of the 10 plans that are to be driven in the coming years.

“To this end, the city will establish a committee to create better jobs, a control tower of realizing job models suitable to Gwangju, no later than this year, and seek a broad conciliatory effort among labor, management, government and civic groups,” he added.

Mayor Yoon announced he would push ahead with other plans: to create a hub city of energy through Energy Valley, to support micro enterprises, to open I-PLEX supporting youth startups, to expand Gwangjuho Lake Eco Park, to attract five-star hotels and duty-free shops, to learn Gwangju’s policies on smartphone applications, and to expand the infrastructure for aging research.

He also mentioned the outcomes of the first two years of the local government, including the successful holding of the Gwangju Summer Universiade, provision of a groundwork for the future food industry, implementation of youth policies exclusive to Gwangju, fostering of a culturally appealing city, establishment of a framework for mutual cooperation between regions as well as between countries, supports for socially disadvantaged groups, and enhancement of civil self-governance
