New KOSPI 200 Companies

The Korea Exchange decided to replace 11 and 10 companies in the KOSPI 200 and KOSDAQ 150 Indices on May 25, respectively. The alteration of the configuration becomes effective on June 10.

The companies newly included into the KOSPI 200 Index at this time include Hanmi Science, BGF Retail, Dongbu HiTek, JW Pharmaceutical, Jeil Pharm, Boryung Pharm, Mando and Hanall Biopharma. Only Hanmi Science and BGF Retail are service companies and the rest are manufacturers. Five out of the 11 are pharmaceutical and biotech companies. 

As a result of the regular change, the ratio of the market cap of the companies constituting the KOSPI 200 Index to the total KOSPI market cap changes to 89% or so with manufacturers and service providers accounting for 57% and 43%, respectively. The ratio of the service industry rises by 0.7 percentage points whereas that of the manufacturing sector falls 0.4 percentage points. The average market cap of those constituting the index is 5.3 trillion won and the top five are Samsung Electronics, the Korea Electric Power Corporation, Hyundai Motor Company, Samsung C&T and SK Hynix. 

At the yearly change in the KOSDAQ 150 Index of this year, the 10 companies including Jusung Engineering put their names on the list and the number decreased by six compared to that of the previous year. The market cap coverage following the alteration is about 59% with tech stocks and the others representing 73% and 27%, respectively. The ratio of tech stocks is expected to increase by 0.4 percentage points with biotech and information technology firms accounting for 37% and 28%.
