Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. (HHI) is breaking through the drought in new ship orders with the cutting-edge smart ship system using big data technology.

The company announced on May 25 that it recently developed a connected smart ship system, in cooperation with global consulting firm Accenture, and released it under the trademark named “OceanLink.”

OceanLink is a system combining the smart ship technology, which was developed by HHI in 2011 for the first time in the world, and the digital analysis technology of Accenture. The system can improve the operational efficiency by analyzing big data generated in the process of ship navigation and manage the life span of equipment, according to an HHI official. With existing smart ship systems, operators were only able to remotely monitor and control engines and generators. However, ship to be equipped with the OceanLink system can create various additional functions based on big data.

HHI stressed that OceanLink also has the “collision avoidance support system,” which automatically detects dangerous objects on the sea and prevent the possible collisions. Keeping pace with regulations of “Mandatory Fuel Consumption Data Collection for Ships” approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which will come into force in 2018, the new system can collect data of an annual fuel consumption, sailing distance and sailing time.

HHI succeeded in developing the system in nine months after it started working together with Accenture to develop the connected smart ship system in earnest in August last year. The company also plans to continuously develop more advanced smart ship technologies, including monitoring systems for optimal sea routes and cargo load sizes, in the future.
