There is controversy over a French weekly newspaper lampooning the nuclear contaminated water leaks in Fukushima after Japan was announced to host the 2020 Olympics.
On September 12, Kyodo News and other Japanese press reported that on September 11, the satirical newspaper Le Canard Enchaîné published a cartoon of sumo players with extra arms and legs, with two referees dressed in protection suits sitting behind them, captioned “Marvelous. Sumo is an Olympic sport thanks to Fukushima.”
NHK reported that the Japanese Embassy in Paris is reviewing what measures can be taken in response.
Previously in October last year, a the host of a French national TV station, France 2, showed a photoshopped picture of a Japanese soccer player with four arms while mentioning the “Impacts of Fukushima Plants,” then apologized after receiving complaints from the Japanese Embassy.
