Minister of Science, ICT & Future Planning Choi Yang-hee visited Thailand from April 27 to 30 at the invitation of its government. There, he delivered a keynote speech regarding platforms for the growth of startups and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) so that Thailand can imitate South Korea’s Special R&D Districts.

“We have a lot of lessons to learn from South Korea in the fields of information and communications technology, innovation, education and so on,” said Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, continuing, “We hope that South Korea will play an important role for the development of the economy of Thailand.” Minister Choi responded by saying, “Thailand and South Korea are sharing their visions in a variety of fields, such as startup, space industry, agriculture and food, and South Korea is willing to share its creative economic experience and cooperate with Thailand for its successful economic development.”

The MOU was signed by Minister Choi and Minister of Science & Technology of Thailand Pichet Durongkaveroj. The purpose of the MOU is to help Thailand set up those similar to South Korea’s Special R&D Districts in the Thailand Science Park.

“The core of South Korea’s startup promotion strategy lies in cooperation among the central and local governments, large corporations and the like for startup ecosystems to be able to be created across the country,” Minister Choi explained, adding, “I am convinced that that the governments of South Korea and Thailand will be able to come up with a series of specific collaboration projects in the near future in that Thailand is also pursuing regional economic revitalization based on different regions’ respective strengths.”
