Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world’s largest shipbuilder and a leading marine engine manufacturer, produced the 10,000th HiMSEN (Hi-Touch Marine and Stationary Engine) engine, a medium speed engine for ship propulsion and power generation that was independently developed by the company.

HHI announced that it recently produced four 3,500kw HiMSEN engines for a 14,400 TEU containership ordered by Costamare, Greece, achieving the cumulative production of 10,000 units in 15 years after the first production in 2001.

The HiMSEN engines are medium speed 4-stroke engines that HHI independently developed in Aug. 2000 with 10 years of research and development, and can be used for both ship propulsion and power generation for onshore power plants. Starting from introducing HiMSEN engine models that can run on diesel, now, HHI has HiMSEN engine lineup that can run on natural gas and the one that can both run on diesel and natural gas.

With the world’s biggest share of 22% in the global medium speed engine market, HHI currently exports the 4-stroke engines to about 40 countries in Central and South America, Middle East and Asia. Based on sales of Packaged Power Stations (PPS) with HiMSEN engines and marine vessel engines, HHI was able to push into the marine equipment market in 2011.

HHI released the next generation CLEAN (Customer, Reliability, Environment, Acceptable Technology, No Defect) HiMSEN engine, which improves power output by 20 percent and reduces exhaust emissions, in Aug. last year. The company is planning to expand its market to advanced countries, including the U.S. and Europe, by diversifying the models in the future.
