Cloud Computing for e-Government

The Korean government has begun the process of developing a strategy for the standard framework for next-generation e-Government. It is planning to expand the application of the standard framework, a major contributor to the export of e-Government, by providing a cloud environment.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security (MOSPA) announced on September 2 that it has undertaken projects for the development of an e-Government standard framework through the National Information Society Agency (NIA). Based on those projects, MOSPA will be actively engaged in developing the framework starting next year.

The standard framework for e-Government combines the software and development tools necessary for the construction of electronic government. The framework plays such a big role in the export of electronic government that it is used in eleven e-Government projects in seven countries, including Vietnam.

Seoul believes that e-Government exports will be increased with a plan for the development of the standard framework. It is due to the fact that the support of a cloud environment and the development of a general-purpose framework unrestricted by development language can expand the application range.

Suh Bo-ram, the director of the e-Government Policy Division of the e-Government Bureau at MOSPA, said, "A lot of developing countries name Korea as a role model for e-Government construction. But in terms of support for cloud computing, the existing standard framework has been insufficient. With this strategic development plan, we will try harder to export the framework, since it is the key software for e-Government."
