Samsung SDI has unveiled its high-density electric vehicle (EV) battery cell, which will make it possible for an EV to travel 600 kilometers on a single charge, at the Detroit Motor Show in the United States.

The company announced on Jan. 11 (local time) that it is showcasing various customized batter products, including the prototype of high-density EV battery cell, a compact EV battery pack and a low-voltage system solution (LVS), during the Detroit Motor Show at the Cobo Center in the U.S.

The new lithium-ion battery cell for EVs has density and driving distance that have been increased by 20 to 30 percent compared to existing prototypes of battery cells, which can travel 500 kilometers on a single charge, and should give the best performance of all EV batteries on the market, Mass production is expected to begin around 2020.

Its compact EV battery pack is a smaller but high-density product which is 20 to 30 percent slimmer than competing products. The LVS solution is a system that can either replace lead storage batteries in non-EVs with lithium-ion batteries or add lithium-ion batteries to existing batteries. When a vehicle uses the system, its energy efficiency may improve by 3 to 20 percent depending on the model.

Based on the best cell and module technologies in the industry, Samsung SDI is planning to strengthen the pack competitiveness further through the synergy between its Xi'an EV battery plant in China, which completed last year, and Samsung SDI Battery Systems (SDIBS). For this, the company will actively respond to various specifications and demands from automakers by developing various product models.
