5G Initiative

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) of Korea said on Dec. 17 that it has succeeded in developing 5G core element technologies, including “millimeter-wave beam switching” technology, as well as “future social network services” (future SNS).

ETRI's "future SNS" is a kind of trial service model to apply 5G technologies that provides dynamic user-centric connections to neighboring people, things and spaces.

In order to realize it, ETRI has developed 5G core technologies, including a Mobile Hot-spot Network; a mobile backhaul technology that provides high-speed Gbps Internet access in vehicles at speeds of up to 500 km/h, such as Korea Train Express (KTX); ZING, a near-field communication technology that enables mass data to be transmitted instantly to neighboring devices within the radius of 10cm; and Mobile Edge Platform, a mobile edge cloud server on vehicles that enables instant content-sharing between users, communication with neighboring things, and Gbps-grade content-centered dynamic SNS services.

The ETRI research team has also developed millimeter wave beam switching technology, which provides fast switching of radio beams to mobile users, and therefore allows seamless Gbps-grade services even in radio shadow areas, which have been considered an obstacle of millimeter wave commercialization.
