SK Telecom, Korea’s largest mobile carrier, made an announcement on Oct. 5 that the company will team up with Nokia, the world's top-tier telecom network equipment provider, to develop a mobile network suitable for emergencies.

As cell phone use tends to surge during natural disasters, the partners will look to tweak bandwidth use in a way that minimizes the load on network infrastructure and disseminate data efficiently to as many handsets as possible.

They hope to spread the relevant technologies, evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) and Group Communication System Enabler (GCSE), to construct a public safety communication system in various markets worldwide, which will also serve as standardization of the two core technologies. In addition, in the hope of contributing to beefing up local small and medium startups, SK will invite UANGEL Co. Ltd. and Cybertel Bridge to join in the efforts.
