Rollable smartphones and foldable smartphones with flexible displays are expected to appear soon.

According to foreign press including Cut of Mac on Sept. 22, Apple is highly likely to launch the first iPhone with a flexible curved screen display in 2018. The front and the back of the smartphone could be curved, and it could be shaped like an eye in cross section. Alternatively, the smartphone could be shaped like a long cylinder.

Also, foreign media reports quoted industry sources and said that LG Display and Samsung Display are currently discussing the supply of flexible displays with Apple.

Changes in smartphone displays are also being detected at Samsung Electronics. Foreign press, including SamMobile, said that Samsung is carrying out “Project Valley,” or “Project V,” in a bid to develop its first foldable smartphone, and the company will unveil it as early as Jan. next year. As Samsung Electronics filed the patent for the smartphone technology with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, expectations are growing that the company will release the world’s first foldable smartphone.

All eyes are on whether or not the changes in the smartphone displays will be a new trend of smartphones, which has reached the limitations of current technology. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was the first product to use a flexible display. At that time, the company curved one side of the display. Soon after that, the Galaxy S6 Edge, which has curves on both sides, hit the market. However, these products are scarcely innovative. On the other hand, rollable and foldable smartphones will be able to provide new innovative functions.
