Under the theme of “International Standards and the Role of the Private Sector,” LSIS Chairman Koo Ja-kyun delivered a keynote address at this year's International Organization for Standardization (ISO) General Assembly at the Lotte Hotel in Sogong-dong, downtown Seoul, on Sept. 16.

The ISO is the world's largest developer of worldwide proprietary, industrial, and commercial standards. Korea joined the ISO in 1963, and this is the first time for the country to hold the organization's General Assembly.

During the address, Koo said, “Due to advances in information and communications technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT), the paradigm of the energy industry has faced a turning point. By establishing international standards, we should rapidly and widely spread energy efficiency technology worldwide. In particular, the digital era came less than 20 years ago, and smartphones appeared only seven to eight years ago. Due to digitalization, common standards have become more important than ever with compatibility between devices. However, the world war in standards has started due to fusion and convergence between various industries, beyond between devices, as the era of ICT and IoT has come now, passing the digital era.”

He continued, “ICT and the IoT have brought convergence in the energy industry, which leads to a paradigm shift, like smart grids. In terms of alternatives to climate change, we should spread energy efficiency solutions by setting international standards in the energy sector, which account for more than two thirds of greenhouse gas emissions around the globe.”

Koo also said, “Tasks of the times, such as IoT, Big Data, climate change countermeasures, and the dawn of fusion and convergence ages are inevitable fates, and international standards are the guidance that presents the right direction for companies.”
