Samsung Electronics will announce a new vision for system semiconductors at the Samsung Tech Day 2023 to be held this October. The Korean semiconductor giant will flesh out its plans to develop and produce “semicon humanoids,” or more human-like robots, with human sensory functions such as smelling and tasting.

The System LSI Division at Samsung Electronics will announce its new vision for system semiconductors at Samsung Tech Day 2023 in Silicon Valley of the United States on Aug. 5, according to industry sources on Aug. 8. Launched in 2017, Samsung Tech Day showcases the Korean tech giant’s next-generation semiconductor technologies.

Park Yong-in, president of System LSI Business Division at Samsung Electronics, will speak about semicon humanoids on the horizon. His keynote will reveal the development status and lay out a commercialization plan for semicon humanoids. Samsung Electronics produces image sensors, high-performance semiconductors that serve as the eyes of cameras. It is developing semiconductors that can detect taste, smell, hearing, and touch along with vision.

The System LSI Division has established a new business task force to examine specific applications of semicon humanoids. Joo Hyuk, vice president of the new business task force at the division, is expected to introduce a medical robot utilizing semicon humanoids at Samsung Tech Day.

Benny Katibian, vice president of the Samsung Austin Research and Development Center (SARC) and Advanced Computing Lab (ACL) who had worked for Qualcomm but moved to Samsung earlier this year will also speak about the current status of Samsung’s GPU and neural network processing unit (NPU) technologies.

Lim Seok-hwan, vice president of Samsung Electronics’ LSI Division, will make a presentation on language learning model (LLM) related technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT, along with a panel of speakers in the United States.

Leading American fabless company AMD will also participate in Samsung Tech Day. AMD Vice President Martin Ashton will provide an update on the progress of AMD’s technological alliance with Samsung Electronics. Samsung has been working with AMD to develop the GPU Eclipse for smartphone APs since 2022. In April of this year, the two companies announced a strategic partnership to develop semiconductors for electronic devices using AMD’s GPUs. The System LSI Division will also introduce more than 900 system semiconductors, including system-on-chip (SoC) semiconductors and image sensors, at Samsung Tech Day.

Unlike 2022, Samsung’s Memory Division will not take part in Samsung Tech Day this year. It will hold its own Tech Day between October and November in the United States.
