On Aug. 7, Lotte Energy Materials announced its plan to build a smart factory in Spain to produce high-end copper foil with a completion target of 2025. The company will invest 560 billion won and produce high-end copper foil for electric vehicle batteries at an annual scale of 30,000 tons.

Initially, the plan was to build a factory with a capacity of 25,000 tons by 2024. However, with the increase in demand from local European customers, the production volume has been expanded to 30,000 tons, and the completion time has been adjusted to 2025.

The total area of the Spanish factory site corresponds to the size of 62 football fields, or 445,000 square meters. It is large enough to accommodate a production line for 100,000 tons of high-end copper foil. There are also plans to secure an additional 500,000 square meters for solar power generation.

This factory is expected to meet the EU’s RE100 standards (100% renewable energy use) by maintaining a stable power grid based on renewable energy sources like solar power.

Lotte Energy Materials has also taken part as a material supplier in the large-scale F3 Consortium project to establish Spain as a hub for European electric vehicles, creating an opportunity to secure local customers.

Currently, the company produces 20,000 tons in Iksan in North Jeolla Province, Korea, and 40,000 tons in Malaysia. Through continuous global expansion, the company plans to increase copper foil production to 240,000 tons by 2028.
