LG unveiled EXAONE 2.0, a super-sized artificial intelligence (AI) service that can be used to develop new materials, new substances, and new drugs, among other things.

The LG AI Research Center unveiled EXAONE 2.0 at the LG AI Talk Concert 2023 at the LG Science Park Convergence Hall in Magok, Seoul, on July 19.

Since the company first unveiled its super AI EXAONE in December 2021, the research center has continued to develop EXAONE 2.0, which has evolved to the next level. EXAONE 2.0 has learned by studying about 45 million specialized documents, including patent documents and papers and 350 million images secured through partnerships.

In particular, in order to address the high cost of super AI, LG focused on making light large language models (LLMs) and multimodal models that process multiple types of information such as images and language simultaneously.

Considering that much of existing specialized knowledge and data is in English, LG developed EXAONE 2.0 as a bilingual model that can understand and answer questions in both Korean and English. It also increased the amount of training data by more than four times compared to the previous model.

While maintaining the same performance as the previous model, the language model of EXAONE 2.0 reduces inference processing time by 25 percent and memory usage amounts by 70 percent, thus reducing cost by about 78 percent.

The multimodal model, which enables bi-directional generation between language and images, uses twice as much memory as the existing model to improve image generation quality but reduces inference processing time by 83 percent, lowering costs by about 66 percent.

On this day, the LG AI Research Center introduced EXAONE’s three service platforms -- Universe, Discovery, and Atelier.

EXAONE Universe is an interactive AI platform for professionals that helps them efficiently consume and produce knowledge. EXAONE Discovery is a new material, new substance, and new drug development platform that will advance the development of the chemical and biological fields. Exemplar Atelier, which supports creative thinking, is a multimodal AI platform that expresses images as language and shows language as images.

LG Electronics’ AI Contact Center (AICC), a representative example of commercialization using ExOne, will be converted to a full service in the second half of this year, and its service will expand to English-speaking countries beginning next year.

The LG AI Research Center is the only research lab in Korea to create generative AI that can understand and generate language and images and even understand specialized literature.
