Samsung Electronics announced on July 13 that it has begun mass production of an in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 3.1 memory solution boasting the industry’s lowest power consumption.

The new product improves power consumption by about 33% compared to the previous generation, based on the 256-gigabyte (GB) lineup. The improved power consumption allows for greater efficiency in managing the vehicle’s battery power, making it an ideal solution for both electric and autonomous vehicles.

Samsung Electronics plans to produce not only 128 GB and 256 GB products but also 512 GB products from the fourth quarter of this year. The continuous read speed of the 256 GB product is 2,000 megabytes (MB) per second, and the continuous write speed is 700 MBps.

The new product also meets the AEC-Q100 Grade 2 standard, a quality standard for automotive semiconductors. The company stated that it guarantees stable performance over a wide temperature range, from minus 40 degrees to plus 105 degrees Celsius.

Through the mass production of this product, Samsung Electronics plans to aggressively target the automotive semiconductor market. According to market research firm Omdia, the global automotive semiconductor market exceeded US$63.5 billion last year, and it is expected to grow to US$96.2 billion by 2026.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics received Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) CL2 certification in April this year for its UFS 3.1 product for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), which it supplies to its customers. ASPICE is a software development standard that evaluates the reliability and capability of software development processes for automotive parts manufacturers.

This month, it again obtained ASPICE CL2 certification for its ADAS UFS 3.1 product through the automobile certification agency C&BIS.

A Samsung Electronics official said, “Through the development and quality management of optimized vehicle memory solutions for our customers, we plan to accelerate the achievement of being the number one in the automotive memory market by 2025.”
