In 8 African Countries

Jeong Hwan-kyun, minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, speaks at the K-Ricebelt Ministerial Meeting at the JW Marriott Hotel in Seocho on the morning of July 10.

The K-Ricebelt initiative, aimed at increasing rice production in Africa by disseminating Korean rice seeds and agricultural technology, has officially begun.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs held the K-Ricebelt Ministerial Meeting at the JW Marriott Hotel in the Seocho district of Seoul on July 10, declaring the official launch of the project.

Ministerial representatives from the eight African countries of Ghana, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Uganda, Cameroon, and Kenya attended the meeting, along with Kevin Urama, vice president of the African Development Bank.

The representatives of the eight African countries evaluated the K-Ricebelt project as distinct from other projects, as it supports the increase of rice production in Africa by disseminating Korea’s experience and technology.

On the same day, South Korea and the eight African countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the agricultural ministers’ meeting to establish a long-term international cooperation system.
