Hyundai Motors is equipping its luxury brand Genesis with LG Display’s Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) display. As Hyundai Motor Group partners with LG Group, evaluations suggest that the “Korean Future Car Alliance” is becoming more robust.

According to the automobile industry on July 3, Genesis will include a “Panoramic Display” using LG Display’s 27-inch OLED on its 2024 model GV80, a facelift model released in the second half of this year. The Panoramic Display connects the dashboard and the center console, which houses the navigation and audio systems, into a single screen. This marks the first time Hyundai has used an OLED as its main display.

Hyundai has so far used Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) for Genesis' dashboard and infotainment systems. However, starting with the 2024 GV80 facelift model they decided to include a Panoramic Display. Recently, there has been a growing trend in the automotive industry to apply panoramic displays to connect the dashboard and center console into a single large screen without interruption. Typically, OLED is applied to enhance the quality of the Panoramic Display.

OLED is thinner and lighter than LCD. It boasts superior image quality, color expression, and brightness, and its viewing angle is more than 30% wider. Hyundai is expected to successively equip new products with OLED displays starting with the Genesis GV80, its flagship model.

Hyundai has formed stable supply chains by partnering with companies with top capabilities in the future car business, including Samsung Electronics and LG Display. LG Display is expected to establish a stable revenue base in the automotive display business by supplying OLEDs to the Genesis. Its related technology capabilities are also expected to be significantly strengthened.

The size of the vehicle OLED market is rapidly expanding. Market research firm Omdia has adjusted this year’s vehicle OLED panel shipment forecast from the previous 890,000 units to 1.14 million units. They foresee that it will exceed 5 million units by 2026. Shipments from 2023 to 2026 are expected to increase by 45% each year. With the Hyundai Motor Group, which ranked third in global sales with 6.85 million units sold last year, deciding to equip the 2024 GV80 model with OLEDs, the growth rate of the vehicle OLED market is expected to accelerate.
