The city of Busan announced on the morning of June 27 (local time) that it has signed a friendship and cooperation agreement with the Liverpool City Metro Region, a well-known British port city where the Beatles were born.

Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon and Steve Rotheram, the inaugural Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, both attended the ceremony and signed the agreement themselves.

This friendship and cooperation agreement will advance exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as clean energy, digital (smart cities), academia (human exchange, scientific research), economics, trade, and health between the two cities. Based on this agreement, both cities plan to carry out the “Korea-UK City Innovation Twins Project,” initiated by the British Embassy in Korea, until March 2025.

Mayor Park eoung-joon of Busan said, "The signing of the friendship and cooperation agreement with the Liverpool City Region, a union of six cities including the well-known city of Liverpool, the city of the Beatles and football, has elevated our city's status on the global stage. We will share the technology and experience of our city, which owns the world's second-largest transshipment cargo and seventh-largest container port, with the Liverpool City Region, a leader in health, chemistry, AI, and carbon neutrality. Together, we will achieve mutual development of both cities and lead innovation between the cities."
