After 17 years at the top of the TV market, Samsung Electronics is now feeling a growing sense of crisis. This is because Chinese companies have been in hot pursuit of the Korean TV giant by waging a price war.

Global TV shipments reached 46.63 million units in the second quarter of this year, up 7.5 percent from the previous quarter, according to market research firm TrendForce. This was due to a surge in sales of Chinese TVs during the 618 Shopping Day, China’s largest shopping event in the first half of a year.

In terms of shipments, Samsung Electronics remained the top TV vendor with 8 million units. However, its shipments were down 13 percent from the previous quarter. In second and third place were China’s Hisense (7.25 million units) and TCL (6.2 million units). These represented increases of 21.2 percent and 19.7 percent, respectively, from the previous quarter.

Fourth place was taken by LG Electronics with shipments of 4.99 million units. After holding the second spot behind Samsung Electronics in terms of shipments until last year, LG continued to slide down the rankings to third in the first quarter and fourth in the second quarter. China’s Xiaomi came in fifth with 2.99 million units. Other companies posted 17.89 million units in shipments.
