Hyundai Mobis is set to launch a rollable display for vehicles within three years, a world-first technology developed by the company.

Choi Jin-yeong, the head of Hyundai Mobis Infotainment Display Center, met with reporters after the 2023 Media Tech Day held at the R&D Center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province on June 26. He said, “Vehicles with rollable displays are expected to be released within as soon as three years.” This is the first time the anticipated release date of a display that rolls up and down has been revealed.

Hyundai Mobis supplies custom-made infotainment displays for the premium vehicles of global automakers.

At the event, Hyundai Mobis emphasized its technical prowess in the infotainment display market. The company’s 34-inch swivel display and rollable display, both world firsts, are representative of this. Both products can change size depending on the driving situation. During driving, they transform into a smaller navigation mode, while during autonomous driving or parking, they shift into a larger mode for viewing content on a big screen.

The infotainment display is expected to significantly contribute to Hyundai Mobis’ future performance improvement. The company's overseas sales target for automotive parts this year is US$1.83 billion (2.38 trillion won).

Hyundai Mobis is also focusing on strengthening research and development (R&D). The company has invested over 1 trillion won in R&D annually over the past three years. As a result, it developed a hologram Augmented Reality-Heads-Up Display (AR-HUD) using proprietary technology, which allows various information such as road guidance and lane changes to be implemented as AR while driving.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis announced on June 27 that it ranked in the Top 5 in the global automotive parts industry, excluding batteries, beating Japan’s Aisin. This was announced in the Top 100 Global Automotive Parts Industry report by U.S. Automotive News, which compiles the annual sales of global companies to finished car manufacturers. Starting this year, batteries, a part of electric vehicle components, were also included in the ranking.

Germany-based Bosch took first place, followed by Japan-based Denso, Germany-based ZF, Canada-based Magna, China-based CATL, and Korea-based Hyundai Mobis. Excluding battery company CATL, Hyundai Mobis ranks fifth.

Other Korea-based companies that made it into the ranking include Samsung SDI (16th), Hyundai Transys (35th), Hyundai WIA (43rd), and SK on (44th).
