The Korea National Railway announced on June 22 that it has secured the “High-speed Railway Design Services” contract from Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK), Poland’s New Airport Corporation, for 43.2 billion won (US$36.5 million).

This project marks the first entry of the Korea National Railway into the European high-speed railway market, having successfully competed with renowned engineering firms from France, Sweden, and local Polish companies. The bid was won in collaboration with Korean private companies, making it a national milestone.

The successful bid was a consortium formed by the Korea National Railway and DOHWA Engineering, both companies that boast considerable experience in high-speed railway project management.

The Korea National Railway has won the design service contract for a segment of the ambitious 2,000 km high-speed railway project that Poland is constructing to connect its new airport and major cities, specifically the segment linking Poland and the Czech Republic.

Additionally, the Korea National Railway is also participating in the bidding for the Sieradz-Poznan section (totaling 155 km) of the same project. They were selected as the top-priced bidder in June 2023, which is expected to further solidify their position in the European high-speed railway market.

The Korea National Railway is investing in a demonstration model project to showcase Korean companies' smart city technologies and products in overseas cities. For this year, the company has selected four projects in Rangpur, Bangladesh; Haiphong, Vietnam; Sakarya, Turkey; and Banjarmasin, Indonesia to further extend its technological prowess and innovative solutions.
