Since 1992, LG Energy Solution has been the pioneering domestic enterprise in secondary battery research, continuously cultivating its innovative capacity.

LG Energy Solution operates Research & Development (R&D) centers in Korea, China, the U.S., and Europe. Over the past decade, the company has poured approximately 6.3 trillion won (US$4.9 billion) into R&D investments. As a result, it holds over 27,000 patents in the material, process, and core technology fields. Including pending patents, the number totals nearly 48,000, establishing LG Energy Solution as an unrivaled industry leader in patent competitiveness.

Additionally, the company employs over 3,300 R&D personnel worldwide. According to an industry insider, “LG Energy Solution not only owns cell patents, but also holds a broad range of Intellectual Property (IP) rights including battery packs, Battery Management Systems (BMS), etc. It is virtually impossible to develop a new battery without infringing on their patents.”

Indeed, LG Energy Solution owns many “world first” technologies and products such as the double-layer coating technology that reduces battery charging time, high-nickel Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) cathodes, and silicon anodes. The company also holds platforms for various types of batteries ranging from small to large sizes and shapes such as cylindrical, rectangular, and pouch.

With its record-breaking number of patents as a foundation, LG Energy Solution is continuing extensive R&D in areas like next-generation batteries including solid-state and lithium-sulfur, as well as implementing smart factories. To facilitate this, they are significantly increasing their R&D personnel.

Not only are they expanding their internal workforce, but they are also actively promoting open innovation through collaborations with global startups, domestic and international universities, and research institutions.
