Objections to Harm

Some forecast that as China imposes a purchase ban on products from Micron, a U.S. memory chip maker, China will try to make up the shortfall with the help of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. In response, the Chinese government reiterated that it was strongly opposed to the possibility of the United States restricting Korean companies’ exports of semiconductors to China.

Asked about the possibility of the United States asking Korean companies to restrict the export of semiconductors to China, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said in a regular briefing on May 22 that the United States was blackmailing other countries to curb the export of semiconductors to China solely to protect its own hegemonic interests.

“This behavior strictly violates market economy principles and international economic and trade rules and undermines the stability of global industrial chains and supply chains,” Mao said. “It is not in the interests of any party and will harm not only Chinese companies but the interests of companies in other countries.”

“We firmly take issue with this behavior and hope that governments and enterprises in relevant countries will stand with China to safeguard a multilateral trading system and global industrial and supply chain stability.” The Chinese government urged the Korean government and companies not to accept U.S. demands.
