Hyundai Motor Group sold more than twice as many electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe as in the United States in Q1 of this year.

Hyundai sold 15,945 EVs and Kia sold 18,886 EVs in Europe in the first quarter of this year, according to Hyundai’s and Kia's corporate materials released on May 7. The figures are more than double their EV sales in the United States. During the same period in the United States, Hyundai sold 8,623 units and Kia 6,080 units.

Hyundai Motor Group’s best-selling EV model in Europe in Q1 was the Kia Niro EV (8,758 units), followed by the Kia EV6 (8,574 units), the Hyundai Kona EV (7,743 units), and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (6,114 units). In the United States, the Niro EV sold 2,688 units and the EV6 3,392 units. The IONIQ 5 (5,736 units) was the Korean automotive group’s best-selling EV model in the United States.

In February 2022, the EV6 was named the European Car of the Year for the first time as a Korean brand, and nabbed numerous other European car and design awards. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was also named the "Car of the Year" in the United Kingdom and Germany.

However, Hyundai Motor Group’s EV sales shank year on year in the first quarter of 2023. In the first quarter, Hyundai Motor Group's European EV sales decreased by 20.6 percent year on year. During the same period, total European EV sales ascended by 43.2 percent.

This year, Hyundai Motor Group plans to expand its market share in Europe by launching the high-performance EV6 GT, the large flagship electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) EV9, and the new Kona EV in Europe and strengthening its EV lineup.
